CIRENCESTER College sports students enjoyed another successful weekend at the British Colleges Sports (BCS) National Finals.

Badminton – Female Doubles.

TRADITIONALLY, Cirencester College students make a strong showing in the badminton competition, having gained seven medals in the last three years.

This year Emma McDonald and Nicole Farmer won a bronze medal, defeating the Yorkshire and Humberside champions over two extremely tight sets (16-14, 15-13) in the play-off for third place.

The subtle drops and faints from Nicole turned the opposition inside out with Emma’s powerful smashes and drives finishing off the vital points.

This success came on the back of Cirencester College’s Badminton Academy winning the National BCS Badminton Mixed Cup, beating Havant College at the finals in Birmingham earlier in the week with a team of four girls and four boys.

Squash – Men's Singles.

FIRST year Ben Hodgson played with great courage, ending in fourth place overall.

Ben has been training alone since winning the West Midlands Championships and is determined to achieve a higher place next year. He played particularly well against British College’s top player, so rising star Ben will have learnt from this experience.

Tennis – Female Singles.

THE multi-talented Emma Minnican – footballer, badminton, cross country and occasional tennis player – managed to defeat two other regional winners and county players to finish third in her group.

Tennis – Men's Singles.

THE standard of the male singles was very high this year with Lewis Francis ending up fourth in his group.

Cirencester Sixth Form College has five sporting academies in rugby, football (male and female teams), basketball, badminton and netball. For more information please contact Chris James on 01285 640994 or email Chris on chris.james@cirencester.ac.uk.
