CAN Swindon Town make the League One play-offs? If you had asked any Town fan that question three weeks ago, you would have been laughed out of the room, writes Andrew Steele-Davis.

Fast forward to the present, however, and that question no longer warrants a simple answer.

Town's season had descended into mid-table mediocrity following defeats at the hands of MK Dons and Wolverhampton Wanderers.

But, following three straight wins that were preceded by a gutsy goalless draw with local rivals Bristol City; the feelgood factor is well and truly back at The County Ground.

Swindon are now a mere point behind Peterborough who currently occupy the last play-off place, although the Posh do have two games in hand over Town.

But Town fans have reason to be optimistic. Peterborough have made a habit of imploding at times this season, and Darren Ferguson’s men, fresh from winning the JPT Trophy last Sunday, claimed only two victories from seven league games in March.

In addition, Posh have not put together a run of more than three wins since October.

Swindon, on the other hand, are showing promotion-chasing form at just the right time.

Town upset the form book again on Saturday to record a sensational victory over Sheffield United.

A last-gasp Louis Thompson strike sealed a 2-1 victory and the manner of the result sent a clear signal of intent to the rest of the division.

Swindon have been accused of lacking an underbelly this season, but the last four games have thrown that argument well and truly out the window.

Town dominated proceedings in the first half, coupling their free flowing, attacking brand of football with a hugely impressive pressing game.

Miles Storey opened the scoring, latching on to a delicious Michael Smith ball before dispatching an emphatic and clinical finish past Mark Howard in the United goal.

United bossed the second half, though, and Michael Doyle hauled the visitors level after he stabbed home from six yards.

United had looked the more likely to snatch a winner, but right at the death Wes Foderingham somehow managed to claw away a goalbound Jamie Murphy effort. Town broke with a purpose and having picked up the ball from his keeper,Thompson also finished the move to notch his first goal in professional football. Cue scenes of delirium among the fans.

Town’s No.1 also made two superb saves in the first half, and it looks likely he will be plying his trade in the Championship next season, with or without Swindon Town.
