Phantom and Supernova Open Meetings

ON Saturday, Bowmoor hosted its first open event of the year welcoming both the Phantom and Supernova Fleets.

In superb spring weather, with winds of 12-14 knots gusting 20+, there were 10 Phantom and 21 Supernova entries.

Rick Plummer, Officer of the Day, set an excellent course taking full advantage of the westerly wind direction to set a long first beat. Bowmoor’s Mike Tustin took first place in both of the morning races in the Phantom fleet with Steve Popple from Shoreham in second place. Olly Hopkins (Bowmoor), was placed third in both of the morning races.

After lunch, Mike retired in the third race after running over a capsized Supernova and Shaun Curtis from Avon and Bowmoor took first place with Olly Hopkins battling through to take second.

Phantom result: 1, Mike Tustin (Bowmoor); 2, Steve Popple (Shoreham); 3, Olly Hopkins.

Supernova sailor Cliff Milliner (2013 National Champion) from Cotswold Sailing Club took first place in both of the morning races in this fleet with his club rival, Gavin Young, taking second.

Class Association chairman Paul Earnshaw from Haversham was third.

In the afternoon, the gusty conditions provided some exciting sailing with both thrills and spills. Cliff and Gavin had an excellent duel providing great entertainment for those spectating. Cliff finished with his nose in front once again.

The home team dominated the middle of the fleet with John Banbrook finishing 10th overall.
