Fairford show good fitness in opening day win
12:00pm Wednesday 18th September 2013 in Sport
Dorset & Wilts Div 1 North.
Devizes II 0.
FAIRFORD set up this weekend’s local derby with Minety perfectly, picking up a clean sheet away from home in their opening match of the season.
Fairford got the better of the early exchanges at Devizes and visited the opposition’s 22 on a regular basis, with fly half Tom Robinson pegging them back with some deft kicks.
Unfortunately, Fairford weren't clinical enough and failed to capitalise on good spells of possession.
The latter stages of the half were spent in Fairford territory but they were able defend astutely and limit the number of Devizes opportunities.
After the break, Fairford were able to show their strength in depth, handing a début off the bench to Rich Crawford.
Fairford continued to look comfortable and within minutes were ahead. The backs showed their class and debutant Mike Wrona smashed through several tackles with ease to make 30 metres. With the defence in tatters, Fairford seized the chance and Ben Hunt was able to score in the corner after a neat offload from 'Ant' Little.
From the re-start, Fairford scored again when another debutant, Ben Crocker, showed great pace to burst from halfway to register his first try for the club.
Fairford were thoroughly in control at this point and their fitness kept them in the driving seat.
They maintained the pressure and were able to add a third try score late on, skipper Rich Lewis scoring from a driving maul.
A penalty followed to kill the game off.
