Dorset & Wilts Div 2 North.

Wootton Bassett II 3 Fairford 12.

A RESOLUTE Fairford side continued their winning ways, keeping Bassett at bay and maintaining their push for promotion in a largely uneventful game.

Fairford proved throughout they were the more clinical of the two sides, soaking up the early pressure and, after a number of attacking phases, earning a penalty.

Josh Lenthall, unfortunately, saw his kick come back off the post.

The resulting clearance from Bassett gave the Fairford line-out an opportunity to show its dominance and a kick from Lenthall allowed centre Steve McCann to put enough pressure on his opposite man to spill the ball. McCann chased the ball through, nutmeged another player, and dived over to score.

Lenthall added the extras from in front of the posts.

Both sides made a tentative start to the second half. Bassett proved wasteful while Fairford weren't able to provide good enough ball for their backs.

Midway through the half, a sumptuous kick from Lenthall had the Bassett back line at sixes and sevens and with winger Stevie Simpkins breathing down their necks, they were forced to settle for a scrum.

Fairford easily turned it over and walked over the line for captain Rich Lewis to dot down.

Bassett found themselves with no real options left and took their chance to get on the scoresheet with a consolation penalty.

Fairford ended the game strongly but sloppy handling denied them a third try.
