LAW, Best, Cantona, er, Griffin. Cirencester Town striker Scott Griffin turned out for a Manchester United Legends side on Sunday and got on the scoresheet thanks to a joint-assist from Frank Stapleton and Sammy McIlroy.

Also in the United line-up were the likes of Fraser Digby, Denis Irwin and Clayton Blackmore.

Griff, who combines playing up front at Ciren with his duties as Office Manager and Football Secretary, earned his place alongside such august company after spending two and half years affiliated to Man Utd from the age of 12.

“I think the only one in my peer group who made a career out of professional football was John Curtis, who played in United’s FA Youth Cup-winning side of 1995 and went on to play principally for Nottm Forest,” said Griffin.

Griff went along to the charity game as a favour to a friend and actually thought he was going to turn out for Banbury.

“But I came off the bench for United and within two or three minutes I had equalised to make the score 2-2,” he said.

“Frank Stapleton and Sammy McIlroy were involved in the build-up and I played a one-two with Clayton Blackmore before hitting the back of the net from 20 yards with my left peg – to only muted applause!”

With his football secretary hat on, Griffin took the opportunity to make overtures to the Manchester United Legends side about paying a visit to the Corinium Stadium.

He said: “I talked to Fraser Digby about it and I hope we can work something out – although he said they usually like to play when it is a bit warmer.”

Griff was delighted with Ciren’s win at much-fancied Sholing on Saturday, even if his brilliant 35-yard strike for his side’s second goal has so far been credited to strike partner Sam Collier.

“I did hit it sweetly and I could hear (manager) Hughesey, who was right behind the line of it, shouting ‘That’s going in’.”

With Matt Sysum having left the club in the previous week and new signing Jon Beeden away on a pre-arranged holiday in Thailand, Ciren used Ellis Dunton as a makeshift centre back.

“Ellis slotted in at centre half and did really well, and I thought Reidy was brilliant in the role of sweeper,” said Griffin.

“We were comfortable at 2-0, only to let them back in the game. But we won it late on and it would have been harsh had we not come away with the points.”

Cirencester Town have no game this weekend as their scheduled league opponents Merthyr Town have to play an FA Trophy home tie against Tonbridge instead.

Ciren next line up in their GFA Senior Challenge Trophy match against Cheltenham Town at Whaddon Road on Tuesday night (November 27). Kick-off 7.45pm.
