Free-scoring Fairford RFC progress in the Junior Cup
10:18am Tuesday 16th October 2012 in Sport
Junior Cup.
Fairford 79 Cainscross II 26.
FAIRFORD had a comfortable win in the Junior Cup against a Cainscross side hit by injuries and call-ups to the first team which saw them arrive with just 11 players. Keen to put on a game, Fairford lent them four players but the contest was over inside 15 minutes as Fairford scored four tries through Neil Bee, Richie Lewis, Josh Lenthall and Luke Sawyer.
The home side completely dominated the first half with strong performances from John Moaby, in just his second start, and the reliable Kenny Robbins. Tries continued to flow with Matt Boulton, Pat Dee and George Lawson all crossing to give Fairford a 59-0 half-time lead.
Cainscross refused to give up and started to rally in the second half, being rewarded with four tries, two coming from Fairford players.
Cainscross led the second half 26-5 at that stage with only Andy Waite crossing the line for Fairford.
But strong words from captain Lewis saw Fairford start to play the kind of rugby they had shown in the first half, which resulted in further tries for Danny Briggs, Will Olds and Lewis.
The victory sees Fairford progress to the cup quarter finals, but credit must be given to Cainscross for ensuring that both sides would have a game.
