No complaints as Purton are routed
1:17pm Monday 3rd September 2012 in Sport
Uhlsport Hellenic Div 1 West.
Purton 1 Brimscombe & Thrupp 6.
PURTON can have no complaints after this humilating defeat at the Red House last Saturday as they were completely outplayed in suffering a third defeat of the season, writes Alan Eastwood.
Brimscombe & Thrupp got off to a flier, netting in the eighth minute – a sloppy goal for the home side to concede.
Purton's Stephen Avenell was unlucky when his close-range header was headed off the line and the same player netted minutes later, only for the goal to be disallowed.
Brimscombe made it 2-0 after 35 minutes but Purton pulled a goal back in the 40th minute when Avenell was upended and Dave Gee converted the spot kick. Just before the break, Purton keeper Cowley injured a hand and did not return for the second half, full back Leigh Brown taking over.
The second half was almost one-way traffic, Purton just breaking out occasionally as Brimscombe netted four more goals to complete the rout.
Missing McCrae, Hall, Brown, Stevens, Miller, Richards and Cadden through injuries and unavailibility was a factor, but the side will need to improve greatly on Saturday's showing or they could be in for a difficult season.
