Below-par Purton miss out on points in derby

Uhlsport Hellenic Div 1 West.

Purton 2 Cricklade Town 3.

Two goals in the opening minutes of the second half helped Cricklade Town earn the bragging rights in the Bank Holiday Monday derby at the Red House, writes Alan Eastwood.

Steve Avenell gave Purton the lead in the first half but Purton failed to play with the same level of skill displayed in their 5-2 win at Lydney on Saturday. Credit to Cricklade, though, as two quick goals gave them a 2-1 lead and although Avenell scored with a great volley to square the match, the visitors took the points when a lob from some 35 yards from out on the left deceived home keeper Johnny Cowley and the ball flew into the top right hand corner of the net.

Purton almost levelled minutes from time as a ball flew right across the Cricklade goal line with players on both sides unable to get a touch.
