Bright start to the Hellenic League season by Fairford Town

Uhlsport Hellenic Div 1 West.

Malmesbury Victoria 0 Fairford Town 2.

MALMESBURY had their third local derby in eight days and came unstuck against an in-form Fairford team who proved worthy winners.

Malmesbury started the brighter of the two sides and only a great save from Fairford keeper Ben Mitchell prevented Steve Bunting from giving the home side the lead.

Play went from end to end and again Mitchell came to the rescue with another great save from Ant Packer, after good work by Chris Salt.

Fairford, who have already beaten one of the title favourites in Old Woodstock Town, struck back and only the Vics crossbar kept the game all square.

Fairford then took the lead on the stroke of half-time when Shannon Pocock lobbed home keeper Mike Alexander.

Malmesbury started the second half full of running but it was Fairford who went further ahead in the 53rd minute when Nathan Gambling tucked a shot under the diving Alexander.

From that point, Malmesbury’s game went to pieces and Fairford ran out comfortable winners.
