CONGRATULATIONS TO the Tetbury quartet of Shane Townsend, Gerry Parry, Richard Cobb and Roger Bird who have won the Fours at the County Finals at Tewkesbury.
They had to dig deep in the early stages against Mervyn Edmunds, Gordon Baker Graham Ayres and Brian Liddington before a four and a five gave them the lead and they went onto clinch the title with a 24-15 win.
Cirencester youngster Max Risby just mised out in the U25s Final which went to Toby Robinson of Chipping Campden.
Robinson had to recover from 10-6 and 13-9 down and only took the lead on the 19th end to lead 18-17. Three consecutive singles saw him take the title 21-17.
The Blue Riband event of the championships, the County Singles Final, was won by last season’s runner-up Eddie Kavanagh of Tewkesbury who beat the 2005 winner Paul Bryant of GB Britton.
Kavanagh, denied last year in a nail-biting finish, got the upper hand early on after picking up a couple of threes to lead 7-3. Winning four out of the next five ends saw him open up a 13-5 lead before Bryant stopped the flow with a double.
A four on the 14th end proved to be the winner and, finishing in style, Kavanagh went on to win the 16th and 17th end to take the title 21-8.
The Pairs Final was won by Richard Speke and Dave Howes of Stroud, who defeated Paul Bryant and Mike Hurse 23-13.
The Cheltenham trio of Bill Notman, Mike Longley and Graham Griffiths had a dream start in the Triples Final and maintained their form to beat Roger Plant, Tony Stone and Kevin French of Redland Green by 27-6.
Keith Hinder (Dursley) beat Tony Iles (Olveston) for the second year running in the Champion of Champions, this time the margin was 21-13. In the Two Wood Singles Final, Hinder beat Andy Liddington of Lydney 17-6.
