Rowley's knock not enough for Lechlade

WEPL Glos/Wilts Division.

Lydney 252-9.

Lechlade 202 all out.

IN THE reverse of last week’s fixture Lechlade visited Lydney, looking to build on two successive wins.

Both teams were fielding stronger sides, however, so the result was anyone’s guess.

Lydney batted first and started positively, against what could only be described as a lethargic fielding and bowling performance, the highlight being captain Paul Godding’s excellent 4-55.

The home side were indebted to an excellently-crafted 120 from Jonathan Kear and, other than 31 from Tony Scott late on, extras were the other major contributor (40), as Lydney closed on 252-9. But with 50 overs, a good pitch and a fast outfield, the total should not have been out of reach.

Lechlade never produced a big innings in reply as early on, Fred Richardson (37), Paul Godding (26) and Roger Pettifer (24) all scored runs but Lechlade fell behind the clock. Club captain Paul Rowley took time to find his form, but a rapid 60 stand with Ross Jeffels (30) gave Lechlade an outside chance.

As wickets fell. ‘Rolls’ chanced his arm once too often and was last out caught in the deep for a belligerent 56 with Lechlade closing on 202 all out.

Scott with 3-37 and Paul Morris (3-44) were the main wicket takers, as Lechlade, although disappointed to lose, did pick up eight valuable points.
