Fielding an ineligible player costs Real Fairford ten points

REAL FAIRFORD, who thought they had won Division One of the Cirencester & District Football League with a victory on the last day of the season, have been stripped of the title.

The league’s Management Committee has found them guilty of using an ineligible player and has docked them ten points.

Real Fairford’s revised total of 43 points drops them down to third place with the Division One title going to South Cerney (52 points). Ashton Keynes (49 points) now finish as runners-up.

It is the first league title for last season’s runners-up South Cerney since they won for four straight seasons starting in 1992-3.

The league’s Fixtures Secretary, Phil Smith explained: "Real Fairford used a player, Matt Reynolds, who was ineligible in that he had played for at least 50 per cent of the season in teams of a higher classification – Fairford Town and Fairford Town Reserves.

"The committee can impose whatever punishment they see fit in those circumstances and it was decided to deduct ten points from Real Fairford – exactly the number of points they earned during the five games when Reynolds was in the side.

"It is a shame that an otherwise excellent and competitive season has had to end in this fashion.

"Real Fairford broke the rules and we have to run the league for the benefit of all the teams involved.

"It is the first time in the history of the league, which began in 1921, that a club has been stripped of its title.

"There was a case in the first half of the 2002-3 season when Cirencester Town were deducted three points for fielding an ineligible player and that effectively cost them the title in a tight finish with Poulton."

Real Fairford manager Cliff Taylor, who admitted the club did not appeal against the decision, said: "It is immensely frustrating, but there is no point getting bitter and twisted.

"The best team is the one that earns the most points so I imagine South Cerney are feeling theirs is a rather hollow victory.

Taylor went on: "The ethos of Real Fairford is to create a real community club in which young talent can develop and play at the highest level possible. Winning the league title was a triumph but a bonus as we don’t see trophies as being the be-all and end-all.

"We have had a fantastic season and I was immensely proud that at the recent combined presentation night of Fairford Town and Real Fairford, all ten awards were won by current or past Real Fairford players. I don’t think the league appreciates what we are trying to do."

There is yet another cloud on the horizon for Real as they have been charged by the GFA with not controlling their supporters at the Arthur Shipway Final on May 7 which they lost 2-1 to Bibury.

There was an incident towards the end of the game when a spectator ran on the field and was involved in a fracas in the aftermath of a Real Fairford player being sent off.

Real were due to discuss the GFA charge along with the loss of their Cirencester League title at their AGM on Wednesday night. "We will formulate a response to both the Cirencester League management committee and also the GFA at the AGM," said Taylor. THE Ciren League will again start with a total of 30 sides in the 2009-10 season. Lechlade return to the fold, Stratton Utd and Poulton launch reserve teams and Beeches Reserves are being reformed.

The league is also close to sealing a deal with a sponsor for the first time.

Why should Cliff Taylor or anyone from Real Fairford be frustrated? And why should South Cerney feel this is a Hallow victory? Real broke the rules and have been punished for it! If Real had not have done this who knows what results they would have got! Rules are there to be followed! Finally, if Real are so hell bent on developing young talent why bring a player down to the Ciren league for last 5 games and have 5 or 6 young lads stood on the side line (2 or 3 of which would not even get on). South Cerney won Ashton came 2nd - get over it!

On the Contrary RedRob, Real did not finish top - they finished 3rd, have you read the artical above!! You cannot play illegible players, its the rules! Do you really consider this to be the right manor or are you just trying to dig at Cerney who have finished 3rd, 2nd and now 1st in the the past 3 years! If its acceptable then why does every team not join ranks with a Prem team and lets say when Man U dont have a game Ronaldo and Rooney can play in the Ciren league!!

Oh and also, as for the Bully tactics you suggest! In all the years of being associated with local football I have not seen a Cerney supporter join the field of play in a cup final to start fighting with the opposition!! Thats really playing in the right manor!

Redrob cheating is cheating - Real Fairford cheated, so they deserve to lose the points, from what I have read Real Fairford had no reason to play an ineligible player once let alone repeatedly. It is a shame that the league had not picked up on this matter sooner. Congratulations South Cerney on your well deserved league win, from what I can make it you have won it fairly, which goes to show there is no need for cheating - celebrate your win with pride.

if you had read an earlier article, you will have read that the player was playing for real fairford because of an injury which required surgery and a pint and a half of blood being drained from his leg. The point of him playing was clearly to slowly bring him back to fitness. They also have said that they were unaware how many games he had played at the higher level, and that it was not intentional cheating, but sheer ignorance to the situation. And as for the fan running onto the pitch to fight? the article fails to mention that the whole thing started when a bibury player decided to start throwing punches, and the first people to reach the fan and drag him off the pitch were people from the real fairford camp. Not condoning what the fan did at all but real fairford cannot be blamed for that! and for the record, the bibury player was also sent off which the article also fails to mention, clearly trying to make fairford seem like the team from hell. laughable!

'not intentional cheating' i'll remember that when i'm next in trouble! Some how i don't think 'sheer ignorance' is an answer for all our sins. As previous articles in the standard state the manager held his hands up and said it was an oversight on his part. No-body is to blame in the situation other than the admin and management of the football club. All players suffer injuries during the course of their sporting life however i understand the need for players to be brought back at a steady pace but that is why Fairford town have there reserve team. If you look at the league fixtures the lad had played 22 games at a higher level up till January and the cirencester league has only 24 fixtures during the course of the whole season. Not exactly fair and again this should of been picked up by the management. Also when you state that the bibury player was sent off, the whole situation is for the 'man in the middle' to sort out and whether or not Fairford condem the fan's action the club is responsible. You will also like to remember that the reason for the the whole incident coming to light for an ineligible player was that during the game against Beeches reserves the player in question was sent from the field of play because of violence on the pitch once again! Community club i hear you say and development of youth. I think someone is setting the wrong example somewhere? Hollow victory? i don't think so. Consistent play, hard earned, fair play, registered players and good team spirit has won the league I'm sure South Cerney will enjoy their well-deserved victory and may i congratulate Ashton on Runners up. Every article above that is convinced that Real Fairford have been wronged fail to acknowledge that rules have been broken and action has correctly been taken by the governing body. Again this is not the first time Real Fairford have been pulled up for this, it also took place against South Cerney reserves when the game had to be played again due to ineligible players. Where is your argument???? I look forward to next season. I think Real Fairford will pick their team carefully next season!

im not saying they didnt deserve to lose the points, they did, rules were broken and action was taken. im saying that it is unfair to label them 'cheats', as yes it was an oversight, but nothing was done with the intention of giving them an unfair advantage over any other team. there is a clear difference between intenional cheating and making a mistake. it was a stupid mistake to make and something they should have picked up but clearly not intentional as they have the most talented squad in the league as it is and didnt need to play him in order to win the league.
As for the other red card, if stepping in and pushing someone away in the chest after he has just headbutted your teammate is deemed violence then im a monkeys uncle. Both red cards you refer to, no fairford player threw any punches even after the opposition did, im not saying they were completely innocent, but the article does seem to have an anti-fairford sound to it. im not saying anything against cerney, they pushed fairford all the way and almost won the league without all this, so i will say well done to them and enjoy the victory. whats done is done, no point going round in circles arguing, but im sure real fairford will come back stronger next season and look to win their title back. rumour has it cliff taylor has just put in a £25million bid for carlos tevez...
