SUNDAY July 1 will see the official grand opening of the newly-remodelled 18th at Cirencester Golf Club.

It sees the course return to the original design of James Braid and gives the club a marvellous signature finishing hole, which will rival anything in Gloucestershire with its tee-off position on the skyline and splendid homeward vista.

Braid’s design was opened at Bagendon in 1910. He was one of the original ‘big three’ professionals of his era – alongside Harry Vardon and JH Taylor – winning no fewer than five British Opens, twice at St Andrews.

He went on to become the pre-eminent course designer of his day and was in demand all around the world. His use of the natural contours of the land make Cirencester Golf Club one of his true gems.

Club members benefit from green free discounts at all Braid-designed courses and can play the so called ‘1893’ courses in his portfolio – those founded in 1893 – for free once annually as part of their membership.

On the official opening there will be a fun driving competition for six teams. Come along and see for yourself how the new hole will enhance the golfing experience at Cirencester.

Meanwhile, Gavin Allen followed up his near-miss third-place finish in the Birthday Vase last month by running out the winner of the June Monthly Medal at Cirencester Golf Club.

Allen led home a trio of fellow mid-handicappers (10.5 to 15.4) with a spectacular score of 73 (lowest gross of the day) to win with his nett 62.

He was followed in by Alan Hughes (64), Johan Pelser (66) and Tom Montgomery (66).

Chris Nevin pipped Dan Gregory on countback with their nett 68s in Division One, while George Pothecary headed up Division Three (15.5 to 28) with his nett 69.

There were 10 twos recorded with Chris Nevin (2nd, 9th) and Steve Bishop (9th, 13th) bagging a pair apiece.

Results: Division One: Chris Nevin (74-06-68); Dan Gregory (73-05-68); Gareth Jones (78-09-69); Mark Bisset (76-07-69).

Division Two: Gavin Allen (73-11-62); Alan Hughes (78-14-64); Johan Pelser (81-15-66), Tom Montgomery (81-15-66).

Division Three: George Pothecary (87-18-69); Philip Smith (91-21-70); Barry Moisejevs (91-20-71); John Kilminster (89-18-71).

Paul Barrington will bring his world-renowned trick shot show to Cirencester Golf Club on Sunday, June 17.

Paul’s visit launches the celebrations for the opening of Cirencester’s remodelled 18th hole which comes into general play the following day, with the Grand Opening on Sunday, July 1.

Barrington combines skill with the patter of a top stand-up comic and members and non members alike can come along for the giveaway price of £7.50. A BBQ will be available. Arrive at 5.30 for the 6pm start.
