Swindon Robins Australian reserve Mitchell Davey remains in hospital after his crash last week during his third tier club Birmingham’s home meeting with Mildenhall. He has suffered severe injuries including a punctured lung, several chipped vertebrae, a broken shoulder blade and 12 broken ribs. At one stage is was put in an induced coma. Speedway riders are notoriously tough but surely he won’t be seen again this season.

The same night 2017 Robins skipper and world champion Jason Doyle warmed up at Poole for the first Grand Prix of the season by taking the Premiership Riders Championship ahead of Robin Troy Batchelor and a third former Swindon captain Hans Andersen.

But unfortunately the GP did not go to plan as Doyle, harshly excluded from his first ride later broke the tapes and could only card five points for a disappointing night before a full house in Warsaw.

Britain’s Tai Woffinden, seemingly out of qualifying for the semi finals after three races took two impressive heat wins before a comfortable second in his semi saw him line up against top scorer Freddie Lindgren, former Robin Maciej Janowski and Russia’s Artem Laguta. In a titanic final Woffinden took the victory after both Laguta and Janowski had led the race.

However Britain’s Craig Cook found the going tough in his GP debut only scoring two points.
