CIRENCESTER Town boss Charlie Griffin insists his play-off chasers won't take Shortwood United for granted.

They finish the season against Nailsworth-based Shortwood on Saturday, knowing three points could be enough to secure a top-six finish, depending on other results.

Town’s late play-off push is still alive with one to play after a thrilling 2-1 victory at Winchester City on Tuesday, courtesy of goals from Ben Whitehead and Alex Albert pushed Griffin’s side into the top-six.

Centurions goalkeeper Mat Wieczorek saved two penalties to help his side stretch their unbeaten run to 12 matches.

Wieczorek saved the first penalty after 11 minutes, but was helpless when Oli Bailey hit the post and Simba Milambo followed up to give the Hampshire side a first-half lead.

Whitehead netted parity for Town. Albert bagged a second after the break when he drove into the roof of the net after good work from Aidan Bennett and Whitehead. Wieczorek made sure Cirencester bagged the points with a second penalty save.

“ Winchester are a decent side and we knew we had to win to keep it all going up to Saturday,” said Griffin.

“The lads showed real strength in the game and Matt has been terrific, I’m pleased for him and the squad this evening.”

However, the Town boss is wary of a Shortwood side who have played four games this week, he said: “Shortwood are a decent side and are a dangerous team and have had some great results of late.”
