A lady visited The New Lawn on Saturday for the first time. She was called luck and she certainly smiled on Forest Green, but not on opponents Chesterfield.

Manager Mark Cooper said that it was not an enjoyable game to watch, being too tense. I would use a different word, frightening.

Chesterfield played attacking football and could have been well ahead at half-time, had not chances been missed and on one occasion the post intervening. In an open game Rovers had chances as well but it was a good job Bradley Collins in goal was on top form.

Full-back Scott Laird scored a cracking opening goal, but Chesterfield equalised and could have gone on to win but the substitutes made by manager Cooper made the difference.

Bray offered pace down the right as did Tahvon Campbell in the centre, but it was Dayle Grubb who was the key man, providing a measured through pass for our Lord High Executioner. Of course our man Doidge wielded his sharp axe and he struck clearly and concisely.

Now a goal behind Chesterfield had to chase the game. Spaces appeared in their defence and through sheer persistence Grubb scored himself.

A penalty to Rovers soon followed, the decision being as clear cut as the one awarded against Rovers in the first half. Doidge made no mistake.

A 4-1 win cheered us up and we travelled home with our mood matching the weather. This would have been in sharp contrast to our visitors who are now surely condemned to relegation. On Saturday’s showing they do not deserve it, but on the other hand league tables do not lie.

It was a good Nailsworth day. A fine crowd was accommodated easily and throughout the match the atmosphere was electric. Good refereeing added to the entertainment. I just wish I could have relaxed and enjoyed it.

My man-of-the-match was goalkeeper Bradley Collins who has matured this season. He may of course return to Chelsea, but deserves a find send off against Grimsby. At the same time we must remember Sam Russell who will also be heading for pastures new. The chance to say farewell to him would be also most welcome.
