Cirencester Town........................... 3

Bishop’s Cleeve............................. 1

CIRENCESTER TOWN’S snowballing winning form shows no sign of letting up as we head towards the business end of the season.

Charlie Griffin’s side were too hot for Bishop’s Cleeve on Easter Monday.

Ben Whitehead’s brace made it 37 goals for the season against a Cleeve side fighting for league survival. Mason Lewis struck in the dying embers of the match to make it a comfortable afternoon for the Corinium Stadium outfit.

This latest victory stretches their unblemished run to 10 games without defeat and with not a bad run-in ahead, the dream to reach the play-offs is still on.

Town are now four points behind sixth-placed Evesham United, but face a stern home test against Bristol Manor Farm on Saturday, who currently occupy third in the table.

Boss Griffin said: "It's a big win, but there's so much more hard work and games to play.

"We must take  one game at a time starting with Bristol Manor Farm on  Saturday."

The home side had much of the play in an eventful first half - hitting the side-netting twice, having a goal that was deflected into the net by a Cleeve defender disallowed for offside and numerous shots - before opening their account in the 40th minute as the prolific Whitehead saw his flick strike a defender on its way into the back of the net.

Despite this setback, Cleeve came out in very positive fashion for the second-half and were rewarded with a goal within two minutes as Jack Watts received the ball near the left-side edge of the penalty area, slipped his marker and clipped a low, curling shot inside the far post.

Encouraged by their early success, Cleeve pressed for most of the third-quarter, but when keeper Matt Wieczorek saved a one-on-one with Watts, the tide changed.

Cirencester regained the lead as former Swindon Town midfielder Mike Pook headed on for Whitehead to fizz in his second.

Lewis wrapped things up in the final minutes as his volley added the gloss to a fine display.

Shortwood United have resigned from the Southern League.

The club have made the decision due to ‘constant financial demands to improve facilities’ and will be demoted from the West division at the end of the season.
