IT was a victorious weekend for Cirencester Golf club competing in the TGI Team Challenge at the Sueno complex in Belek, Turkey.

Fifty-five sides from all over the UK competed over 36 holes on the stunning Dunes and Pines golf courses.

The format was four-ball with the best two scores counting. Cirencester fielded two sides, the A team led by PGA Professional Mitch Caunt with Jonny Cowley, George Peare and Andy Tibbles.

The B team was led by PGA Head Professional Ed Goodwin, with Sam Mitchell, Deb Organ and Chris Pollard. After the first round, Ed’s team notched up 83 points and ended up fifth place three points behind the leaders.

The Goodwin team were the last group to tee off in the competition and after nine holes added 39 points to their total, but it was clear this wasn’t going to be enough to win the competition.

Missed putts on the 16th hole weren’t dwelt on and despite hooking her drive, Organ (10 handicap) launched her second shot just short of the green on the par five and then neatly chipped and putted for a birdie.

Goodwin also collected his sixth birdie of the round. With everything to play for on the 18th, Goodwin secured another birdie after a spectacular 115-yard pitch to the pin and both Mitchell and Organ putted out for pars.

Forty-four points on the back nine totalling 83 points and the team knew they would be there or thereabouts.

The results were not revealed until the formal evening dinner and when the runners up were announced with 162 points, the Cirencester table erupted with cheers.

In addition to the first prize (a TaylorMade driver and irons), there was more Cirencester success with Organ picking up the nearest the pin, Peare winning the longest drive and Cowley finishing second in the chipping competition.
