Sutton Benger 18 Westbury 15

SUTTON Benger scored a try with the last play of the game to beat Westbury to go top of Dorset and Wiltshire Division Two North.

Benger faced one of their toughest afternoons of the season against Wesbtury side who were determined to cause an upset against Benger, who started the day second in the league.

It was Westbury who took the lead on a glorious winter afternoon with a penalty from 40 meters out, both sides then exchanged a further penalty to make it 6-3 to Westbury.

The sides continued to battle it out in the middle third but it was Benger who were to score the only try of the half with a rare excursion into the Westbury 22.

Christopher Bolter, the Benger scrum half, doing what he does best, breaking off the back of a ruck to score under the posts.

Captain Callum Harford then made the conversion to give Benger a 10-6 lead going into half time. In the second half, Westbury put real pressure on Benger and any attempt by Benger to clear their lines through upfield kicks were thwarted by a strong running game from the Wesbury back three.

The pressure on Benger began to tell as the number of penalties they conceded crept up.

The Westbury fly half, Aaron Vaughan, who had an excellent kicking game from both hand and tee made Benger pay and the home side found themselves in the unfamiliar position this season of being behind 15-13 with five minutes to go.

It is the Benger spirit that has been one of the bastions of their success this season and it was their never say die attitude that was going to see them snap victory from the jaws of defeat.

With Westbury pinned back in their own 22, they looked to drop the ball back to their fly half for the clearance.

Benger’s flanker, Bell, reacted quickly, making a superb tackle with the supporting forwards turning over the ball at the breakdown.

Matt Rea, Benger’s number eight, quickly shipped the ball out to centre George Dent, who ran the ball into the corner.

With the Benger’s fans still celebrating, the referee brought an end to a fantastic game.

Westbury were unlucky to go home with a defeat but it is these moments that makes the sport what it is.
