Wantage Town 2
Fairford Town 0
FAIRFORD Town gave a good account of themselves against promotion-chasing Wantage Town, with a second half penalty miss ruling out a late comeback, writes Chris Tanner.
The Reds fielded a strong starting eleven for the game, with the bench boosted by the return of several first team regulars.
Wantage included former Fairford midfielder Jon Davoile in their side, having recently signed from league leaders Highworth Town.
Steve Robertson opened the scoring for the hosts with his 34th minute finish hitting the back of the net for his 35th goal in 41 games this term.
Fairford rallied well and continued to plug away for the leveller, going in just a goal down at the interval.
Nick Thorne stepped off the bench to secure the win for the Freds, with his 73rd minute strike extending the hosts' advantage.
The visitors were given a lifeline late on with a penalty award, but top scorer Lee Smith saw his spot-kick saved by home stopper Curtis Meare to wrap up the victory.
