FAIRFORD boss Jody Bevan paid tribute to ‘a real team effort’ as he saw the Reds claim three points with a 4-0 home win over Royal Wootton Bassett Town at a rain-soaked Cinder Lane on Wednesday evening, writes Chris Tanner.

Despite the conditions, Bevan was delighted with the response of his players with captain Lee Smith and striker Conor Lynch scoring twice.

“It was a great result,” reflected the boss.

“The lads were fantastic in what were pretty difficult conditions. Everybody was focused on getting the win from the moment they walked through the door, whereas it was obvious that most of the opposition didn’t want to play.”

Visitors Royal Wootton Bassett had got the better of Fairford in a brace of cup fixtures earlier this season, but after a 1-1 draw in the reverse league fixture – the Reds went one better with a league victory at Cinder Lane.

“We rode our luck at times, particularly in the first 15 minutes of the second half,” added Bevan. “But once we scored the second goal I felt we bossed the game and were worthy winners.

“It was a real team effort where everybody was a seven out of ten, or better.

“I am delighted to see the lads score four, but the bigger positive for me was to keep a clean sheet.”

Fairford are next in action this Saturday at third-placed Wantage Town, before the cup tie against North Leigh United at Cinder Lane on Wednesday 21st February (7.45pm).
