Ed Goodwin won his second Gloucester and Somerset PGA Medal of 2018 when he triumphed at his home club of Cirencester.

He was the only player to match par as he posted 36 point stableford return. He won by two from the previous week’s winner George Ryall (Worlebury) and the ‘chief bridesmaid’ Giuseppe Licata (Chipping Sodbury)

The event was changed from the usual Medal format to a Stableford points system thanks to a sharp frost in the ground at the Gloucestershire course. This led to some interesting bounces at the start of the round for many players. Goodwin managed his outward nine journey well and was one of only two players to beat the front nine par of 35 as he carded birdies at the 3rd and 6th to counter his only bogey at the second. Coming home was considerably tougher heading back into the cold wind with many holes requiring some long approach shots to find their greens in regulation. Impressively Goodwin recorded 7 pars and a birdie at the 16th with only a double bogey at the short 11th failing to add to his winning points total.

Ryall continued his good form with his third top 3 finish in his last 3 starts as he shared second with Licata.

For Licata it was his third runners-up finish since the turn of the year but he virtually negated any dent that Goodwin could make into his lead at the top of the Total Triumph Order of Merit. He now leads Goodwin by over 50 points as the season reaches it closing stages and he must be favourite now to retain the title he won last year.

Henbury assistant Michael Hunt ended the day in fourth spot with 32 points one clear of clubmate Luke Derrick.
