THERE was brightness all round at The New Lawn on Saturday.

The smiles on all our faces matched the shiny new shoes worn by boss Mark Cooper. It was obvious on Saturday he had shopped well, both on-and-off the field.

Cambridge scored two first-half goals, perhaps too easily, but Rovers undaunted, got better and better - apart for ten minutes at the start of the second-half, they were rampant.

Switching to a back-four they moved forward swiftly, adding three goals to the two scored in the first period.

New signing Dayle Grubb deservedly earned the headlines, scoring two fine goals. He found space behind the formidable front pairing of Reid and Doidge. We now have a midfielder who can score goals.

Two other factors contributed to a thrilling afternoon.

Firstly the playing surface. It was excellent. Much local football was off because of waterlogged pitches. Not at the New Lawn! Secondly the referee and assistant had fine games.

A strong Cirencester contingent attended the game and were very impressed by the whole afternoon. They will be back!! Incidentally one of the group won £100 in the raffle. They are certain our new team will climb the table.

Next Saturday brings the motorway marathon to Carlisle. For me this is not a journey I shall be making. My colleague will bring you coverage of the game. Read his post-match views on the website and the paper.

Finally, sad news from Cirencester Cricket Club. Trevor Telling has passed away. Trevor was a fine clubman, giving the club marvellous service both on the field and off. RIP Trevor.
