George Ryall warmed up for his quest to regain his European Seniors Tour card with a victory in the G&S PGA Medal on a windswept Channel Course at Burnham and Berrow.

The Worlebury teaching pro scored a superb 35 points to win by 2 from Chipping Sodbury’s Giuseppe Licata, who occupied the runners up spot for the second win running.

A smaller than usual field for the event at Burnham and Berrow took to the course in generally sunny but very cold and breezy conditions. A brief hailstorm also interrupted their progress as they tried to accumulate as many points as possible in the challenging conditions.

Ryall, who was attached to the Burnham club until recently, dropped shots at the opening three holes which wasn’t uncommon but birdies at the 4th, 5th and 7th saw him turn in a level par score of 18 points.

Coming home the birdies were harder to come by and he only added one at the final hole to offset two bogies for his 35 point total. He crucially scored points on each every hole, a feat no one else managed.

Next week he flies to Portugal to take part in the Seniors Tour qualifying school in what he hopes will be kinder weather conditions.

Licata matched the birdie haul of the winner with 4 although that could have been even better had his tee shot at the short 8th that struck the flag disappeared rather than stay above ground.

He did convert it for a birdie and repeated the score on the hole the second time around too. His second place finish means his wait for a win goes on but he consolidated his Total Triumph Order of Merit lead over Cirencester’s Ed Goodwin to over 50 points.

The head professional of the host club David Haines enjoyed his best result of the season so far with a return of 32 points to boost his Order of Merit ranking.

Those three players were the only ones to top the 30 point mark and the final money was shared on 28 points by Goodwin, Alex Munro (Bristol Golf Centre) and Tim Elliott (Tall Pines).
