YOUNGSTERS from Cirencester RFC played a part in creating history as they participated in last weekend’s Land Rover Premiership Rugby Cup, hosted by Worcester Warriors, writes Becky Grey.

Cirencester Under-11s were one of 30 U11 and U12 teams in attendance, and even got the chance to strut their stuff in front of a host of Worcester players, including Matt Cox and Tom Howe, who were casting their eyes over the next generation of stars.

And while the team missed out on the chance to attend next May’s Aviva Premiership Rugby Final, 10-year-old Alex Kent insisted he had loved every minute of the experience.

“I didn’t know any teams that were here before I came, so I didn’t know what the tournament was going to be like,” said the Meysey Hampton Primary School pupil.

“It was very unpredictable and playing new teams teaches us skills that we can take on in our team to improve.

“I like Worcester so playing at Sixways is really cool and we stayed to watch the Northampton Worcester game after the tournament.”

Teams from across the county will compete at various festivals hosted by the 12 Aviva Premiership Rugby clubs this season, with the opportunity to earn a trip to the Aviva Premiership Rugby Final on May 26 and join in a Land Rover Premiership Rugby Cup parade at half-time.

Matt Cox admitted he had been impressed with what he had seen.

"Seeing these youngsters play, I can never remember being that good. In five years they’ll probably be taking my job!”
