GLOUCESTER Rugby are one of 14 clubs taking part in Project Rugby, a new grassroots initiative by England Rugby and Premiership Rugby designed to increase participation.

Project Rugby will specifically target black, Asian and ethnic minorities as well as people from low socio-economic backgrounds and disabled people, aged 14-24.

The project aims to reach more than 12,000 participants by summer 2018 by providing accessible opportunities to play rugby, in over 200 locations across England.

Project Rugby will attempt to grow participation in new communities and increasing diversity in the game.

Terry Fanolua, Gloucester Rugby’s head of community rugby, said: “We’re fully behind Project Rugby and its aim of bringing the game to new audiences in Gloucester.

"Our club plays a prominent role in the local community so it’s important that people view the game and Gloucester as inclusive and open to anyone.

"We’re looking forward to changing perceptions of rugby union currently held by those who may not traditionally think the sport is for them.

"Our Project Rugby initiatives within the community will give new players the chance to enjoy the fantastic benefits of rugby, hopefully creating fans for life and helping the game grow further in Gloucester.”
