South Cerney 5½ The Players Club ½

SOUTH CERNEY Seniors moved into the final two matches of their season with a comprehensive victory over The Players Club.

Five of the six home pairings won their matches: captain Dave Mitchell & Rod German by 5&4; Alan Martin & Brian Mace by 3&2; Keith Hughes & John Quick 1up; Cameron Thomson & Nigel Rawlings by 2&1 and Phil Stansfield & Andy Taylor by 3&1.

The clean sweep was avoided when the final match, involving Brian Whittaker & Ian Haslam, finished all square on the 18th.

South Cerney 4 Bassett Down 2
FORTRESS South Cerney proved too tough a venue for the visitors from Bassett Down as the home seniors completed their season of fixtures with their 10 victory of the year, having remained undefeated in August and September. Six of those victories came at home with only two defeats and a draw against Broome Manor to tarnish the record.

The result against Bassett Down was built upon victories for Keith Hughes & John Carrington by 3&1, John Quick & Mac Cannons by 4&3, Rod German and Brian Mace 2up, and Colin Bulley & Ian Haslam by 5&3.

A rare defeat for the home captain Dave Mitchell, playing with Andy Taylor (1 down), was followed by Phil Stansfield and Guy Montezuma’s 3&2 defeat.

But the overall victory for South Cerney provided some measure of revenge for the 5-1 hammering dished out by Bassett Down in the reverse fixture back in May.
