FELIPE BARCELOS has signed for Cirencester Town bringing Charlie Griffin’s senior squad up to a full complement of 16.

The Brazilian-born attacking midfielder and set piece specialist adds flair, pace and guile to Griffin’s new-look team.

He has been a thorn in the side of Cirencester when playing previously for Oxford City and Banbury United but has now move to the area and the manager was keen to get him on board.

Barcelos featured on the left side of a five-man midfield when the free-scoring Cirencester Town outfit racked up another hatful of goals in the 5-1 defeat of Swindon Town U18s on the academy pitch at the Corinium Stadium on Tuesday night.

Despite the scoreline, Alan McLouglin’s young Swindon side proved a much greater test than Cheltenham Town’s youngsters had been on Saturday and threatened to overrun their hosts in the opening 15 minutes when they hit the post.

Cirencester’s prolific new striker Ben Whitehead put Ciren 1-0 against the run of play after 21 minutes from which point the home side settled and began to take control.

Whitehead made it 2-0 before the interval.

It was three soon after the restart when the ball ended up over the line after Jordan Stoddart’s aerial challenge on Swindon keeper Archie Matthews.

Jordan Edwards pulled a goal back for Swindon with a delicious curling free kick low to Academy keeper Arie Peursum’s left.

But Cirencester finished the strongest. Substitute Henry Spalding’s sizzling left-footed drive was tipped on to the bar and over by Matthews who had made an even better save from Barcelos in the first half.

But he could nothing to keep out winger Jack Watts’ shot after a darting run into the box. And he was fooled by a curling a free kick at the near post from Jack Horrell who had given every indication of hitting a cross into the box.

Cirencester take a mixed XI to Shrivenham in their next warm-up on Saturday when keeper Matt Wieczorek will pull on the gloves again after resting a thigh train in recent games.

Griffin will give a strong indication of his preferred starting line-up for the opening league game of the season against Taunton Town on Saturday, August 12 when his side bid to win the GFA Senior Challenge Trophy for the second time in three seasons when they take on Bristol City’s U21s at Almondsbury next Wednesday.
