MINCHINHAMPTON’S Jack Cope made a very solid start at the English U18 Boys’ Open Championship at the West Sussex Golf Club on Tuesday with a one-under par 67 for joint 14th place in a strong international field of 144.
Seventeen-year-old Jack is three off the pace set by England’s Enrique Dimayuga – who shot 64 on his 16th birthday – as well as two Italians Andrea Romano and Julien Paltrinieri.
Thirty one players matched par of better in the opening round as they bid to lift the prestigious Carris Trophy.
Cope, the youngest ever winner of the Gloucestershire county championship this season, also added the club championship at Minchinhampton to his list of achievements recently.
This week he is also bidding to help England win the Nations Cup decided over the first two rounds of the Boys’ Open.
