GLOUCESTERSHIRE county champion Jack Cope is among six young internationals who will be on double duty next week when the prestigious Carris Trophy takes place at the West Sussex Golf Club from July 25-28.

Cope will hope to get his hands on the Carris Trophy, the prize for winning the English U18 Boys’ Open Amateur Championship, which has been lifted in the past by future Major winners like Sandy Lyle and Justin Rose.

The 72-hole championship is played over four days with the 144-strong field reduced to 60 at the halfway cut.

The scores of six England players, including Cope, will also count towards the Nations Cup team event over the first two rounds of the championship, with the best two scores from three counting each day. England are the current holders.

Cope, from Minchinhampton Golf Club, will play for England's team two alongside Ben Jones (Northamptonshire County) and Robin Williams (Peterborough Milton, Northamptonshire).

Team one consists of reigning Carris Trophy holder Angus Flanagan (St George's Hill, Surrey), Toby Briggs (Dunston Hall, Norfolk) and Harry Goddard (Hanbury Manor, Hertfordshire).

The Carris Trophy has attracted a strong international field, with players travelling from across Europe and as far afield as the USA and South Africa.

Seventeen-year-old Cope, who won his men's county championship earlier this summer, also tied for the Irish Boys’ Amateur Championship only to lose in a play-off when his opponent holed out from 129 yards for an eagle.

He helped England win the 2016 Canadian International Junior Challenge where he was eighth individually.

He goes to West Sussex in fine form having secured a top-20 finish in last week's Tillman Trophy at Knole Park in Sevenoaks, Kent, a world ranking amateur 72-hole championship.

“I am delighted to be one of six boys selected for the Nations Cup team at the Carris Trophy next week," said Jack. "This is one of the biggest boys’ events in Europe and I can’t wait to compete.”
