ADRIAN Williams and Carol Clarke did Cirencester Athletics and Triathlon Club proud in Dusseldorf over the weekend.

Both produced excellent performances in their age group categories at the European Triathlon Sprint Championships when 862 competitors gathered on the Rhine.

A challenging swim, in choppy waters that left competitors with a choice of wearing wet suits or not, was followed by an exhausting 64-stepped climb from the river and a 1,000 metre jog even before transition one and the bike mount.

A single bike loop of 20.7km – on a good surface, but with tight technical corners - saw the Rhine crossed on no fewer than four occasions. There were fast times but several hospital casualties too.

Williams finished in a creditable eighth place (Male 40-44) in a very strong field and Clarke – twice a European silver medallist in Switzerland and Portugal – finished fourth (Female 65-69), just 27 seconds behind the silver medallist and three seconds off a bronze.

As third Briton home, Carol gets an automatic entry into the Europeans again in Glasgow next year.
