THE launch of the Bob Kilby biography “To the Heart of Kilb” last week brought together the remaining members of the famed Swindon Robins speedway team which won the league title in 1967.

The life story of Robins legend Kilby has been written by his son Lee, who is now Swindon's commercial manager and boss of the Swindon Sprockets side. Bob raced for 18 years from 1964 but passed away in 2009.

As part of the healing process Lee decided to write the book but completion initially was fraught with difficulty as he tried to balance his family life and career with the raw emotion of losing his father.

Unhappy with his job Lee decided to quit to devote his time to completing the biography.

As luck would have it the commercial manager's role at Blunsdon came up soon afterwards. With his sales background and knowledge of the club and town he was a shoo-in for the post.

The book was launched last week at Swindon Supermarine where mementoes of Bob’s speedway life including trophies and photos were on display.

Surprise of the evening was the appearance of the 1967 league trophy itself.

Long time Swindon supporter Dave White from Lechlade tracked down the trophy in someone's loft and managed to borrow it for the evening.

Team member Mike Broadbank said it was the first time any of the team had seen the trophy!

“To the Heart of Kilb” which runs to 340 pages is available from Lee Kilby at a cost of £16.
