SWINDON Robins skipper Jason Doyle has sustained three broken bones in his right foot after a crash while racing for his Polish side Falubaz Zielona Gora.

The Polish club revealed that Aussie ace Doyle had broken the metatarsal bones when crashing with former Swindon rider Adrian Miedzinski during heat 14 of their 46-44 victory at Torun on Sunday.

Torun was also the site of Doyle's crash in the penultimate Grand Prix of last season, which ended his season and all hopes of lifting a first world title. He was leading the standings at that point.

Doyle, who is second in the world championship standings for 2017, still hopes to ride in this weekend's Grand Prix round in Horsens, Denmark.

He is set to test his fitness in Friday’s Kjærgaard Danish SGP practice session, according to Marek Cieslak, his Polish team manager.

Cieslak told a Polish website: “Doyle's injury is less serious than expected. He will not need an operation. Jason said that he is going to Horsens.

“On Friday he will take part in practice and then decide whether to start in Saturday's competition and possibly the league match with Leszno on Sunday.

“I believe that it will be good because the injury is not as serious as it seemed. Initially, it looked like three weeks off.”

While a normal person would need a month’s recovery after such an injury, Cieslak admits speedway stars are a special breed.

He added: “Of course, the best solution would be a month’s break because any normal person after such an injury would need to recover. It is similar to a broken collarbone.

"Speedway riders get back on a bike almost immediately, and the average person waits for weeks. Medicine with athletes is different.”

The next scheduled date for Doyle with the Swindon Robins is at home to champions Wolverhampton Wolves in the SGB Premiership a week on June 29.
