WHAT a difference a week makes in cricket, at least for Barnsley Beeches in the Gecko Cricket CDCA Division One.

Last week they brought high flying Cricklade down to earth by bowling them out for under a hundred. This week they suffered the same fate at home to winless South Cerney.

With rain in the air visitors Cerney had no hesitation in fielding when they won the toss and they soon had the hosts in real trouble. The introduction of Garrick Chivers (3-23) as an early first-change bowler took out most of the top order and his good work was continued by the reintroduction of Chris Wearing (3-13).

As the mayhem continued at one end Andrew Walker (25) held things together at the other until he too was removed by Paul Loxton (2-20), who bowled well until his game ended early through injury.

The Barnsley total of 80 all out was never going to trouble the visitors but they too found batting tricky against a tidy attack with Andrew Coulter (2-13) bowling well. However veteran Dave Wheeler (24*) stood firm and saw his side home at 81-3 after 24 overs for a much-needed first win of the season.

The only other game completed was at Tetbury 2nd XI where visitors Bibury came away with the points in another relatively low-scoring affair.

Having been inserted the hosts lost wickets steadily in difficult conditions with only Jason Townsend (24) and James King (22) reaching respectability. R Wills (3-28) was the pick of the visiting bowlers as the Tetbury innings ended on 135-9.

After tea opening bowler Andy Insull (4-33) made life difficult for the visitors. However with wickets tumbling at one end, Charlie Robinson (70*) played a sparkling innings, which included 10 fours and a six, to see his side to a comfortable victory at 136-5 in the 24th over.

At Pinkney Park hosts Sherston Magna decided that quick runs on the board was the answer as the rain threatened.

Opening the batting skipper James Kutchera (33) led the way with five fours and four sixes then as he departed his replacement Ewen Kenny (62*) upped the ante by hitting eight fours and three sixes. This took hosts Sherston Magna to a spectacular 119-1 off only 13 overs when the rain arrived and washed out any hope of further play.

The matches between Poulton 2nd XI and Cricklade and between Longborough & Sezincote and Oakridge were cancelled due to the wet conditions before a ball was bowled.
