CIRENCESTER PILGRIMS have won the Premier Division of the Cotswold Churches League after a last-game thriller.

A 3-1 away victory at St Matthews of Cheltenham – who had beaten the Pilgrims twice previously during the season – enabled them to pip their great rivals Cornerstone Utd to the title by a single point.

After a cautious start the Pilgrims – who are part of the Cirencester Baptist Church – scored two goals before half-time which settled the nerves and went on to win 1-3.

Club spokesman Martin Rigley said: "League win apart, there were several highlights.

"After a two-hour hour drive to Ware in Hertfordshire we lost in the Christian FA Trophy, but it was a great game to watch. "To do the double over last year's league and cup winners Trinity & Quedgeley was special, as was getting through to the Cotswold Churches League Trophy final, even though we lost to Cornerstone Utd of Evesham.

"Particular mentions are due to Tom Cox who will be leaving us this summer to go to America on a soccer scholarship, and to Danny Bishop whose goals and footballing ability have helped us out no end this season.

"Next term we will be starting up a second XI as there are a lot of players who want to join our group, so the future's looking bright."
