WEPL Premier One
Lechlade Did not bat
Potterne 55-1

WITH a wet wicket and the forecast of showers Lechlade captain Freddie Martin had no hesitation in asking Potterne to bat at the Manor Ground on Saturday.

He took the new ball with Liam Smith and made the openers struggle for runs with some tight bowling.

After 7.2 overs the first of the showers duly arrived with Potterne on 13-0.

Soon after the rain break Martin had Josh De Souza caught at slip by Joe Breet. Smith (8-1-15-0) was eventually replaced by Tom Barnes and Martin by Jock Jamieson-Black but after 20 overs with the score on 55-1 another heavy shower hit.

The adjoining wicket became very wet but the forecast for later in the day was better and the teams spent a long afternoon waiting for an improvement in the weather, which never came, and the game was eventually abandoned at around 6pm.

Six points were awarded to each side and Lechlade are currently in sixth place (of 10) in the table.

Lechlade are settling into life in Premier One with an opening-day victory over Bedminster followed by a defeat at Corsham.

But the problems of having a young squad increase at this time of year with exams from GCSEs through to degree courses taking precedence over cricket which meant that Chris Harwood, Harvey Jupp and James Palmer were all absent on Saturday. Captain Martin was also going to miss out but gave up a day's revision to play.

The challenges keep coming with this weekend's trip to title favourites Bath, although all that quartet bar Palmer are available for selection.

Meanwhile Lechlade have been boosted by the news that they will be joined for a number of games, starting on June 3 at Downend, by Gloucestershire’s Jack Taylor, who has been scoring freely for the county this season.
