CIRENCESTER Golf Club featured at the head of a Gloucestershire & Somerset PGA Medal for the second event running but this time it was young assistant pro Mitch Caunt who possessed the winning scorecard and not his boss Ed Goodwin.

For Caunt it marked his first-ever win as a professional as he shared top spot with amateur Spencer Vickery at Henbury Golf Club.

The pair held a two-stroke winning margin over Total Triumph Order of Merit leader Giuseppe Licata and George Ryall.

The final 18-hole G&S medal of the winter season got underway in chilly but bright and dry conditions at the Bristol venue. Following the recent dry spell the course was firm underfoot and some testing flag positions made scoring tricky for the 25-strong field. No player managed to beat the par of 69 as the course more than held its own.

Caunt was playing alongside his boss in what was just his third appearance of the season.

He started slowly dropping a stroke at the second ahead of a double bogey at the 3rd which marked the low point of his round as he stood at +3. A birdie at the 4th arrested the slide and he immediately added another at the par 5 fifth hole. A monster putt across the green at Henbury’s signature hole, the 7th, saw him return to level par and he moved under the card for the first time as his third two of the round was marked down at the par 3 11th hole.

A steady run of pars was broken only with a bogey at the dogleg par 4 16th as he slipped back to level par where he would finish.

For a time it looked like he would be the sole winner but Kendleshire amateur Vickery matched his score with a card showing four birdies and the same number of bogeys.

With just the Total Triumph Strokeplay Championship over 36 holes remaining next week to decide the Order of Merit champion, current leader Licata strengthened his position with a one-over par 70 to share third place.

With his nearest challengers Ashley Mansell and Ed Goodwin failing to produce their best on the day, the Cirencester head pro had a nightmare round of 83, Licata now enjoys a 32-point lead meaning a top-nine finish or better will secure the title for him no matter what the others produce next week.
