MORE than 400 boys and girls, from U11s right through to U18s, are taking part in the annual youth 7s tournament at Cirencester RFC on Sunday.

Established for 40 years, it is believed to be the longest running competition of its kind in the country.

The hugely anticipated event has attracted teams from across the county and beyond, including Stow, Painswick, Ledbury, Dursley, Cheltenham, Cinderford, Devizes, Chippenham, Fairford, Hucclecote and Bath.

The tournament has been organised by Mike Timbrell and Dave Reeves, chairman of the Minis & Juniors section.

Mike said: “We are thrilled with the uptake and registrations this year.

"Thanks also to the M&J volunteers who are helping to run the day. Their support is essential for us to put on an event of this size.”

Staging such competitions is not possible without the support of local businesses and Cirencester is pleased to announce a new headline sponsor for the event.

Fish Brothers VW Commercial and Lexus Swindon will be showing vehicles at the tournament and this marks the start of a partnership between the club and the family-owned car dealer group based predominantly in and around Swindon.

The tournament is also being supported by the Pied Piper Appeal Gloucestershire children’s charity for sick and disabled kiddies across the county.

Last year the main trophy, the U18/Colts Hugh Evans Memorial Shield, was won by Gordano.

Cirencester U11s kept the D&J Sports Cup 'in house' and the club’s U15s took the Alder King Shield.

The first matches start at 9am with the closing awards and presentations around 4.30pm/5pm.

The clubhouse and bar is open all day for refreshments and there will also be a BBQ.

All are welcome to enjoy the Bank Holiday festivities at The Whiteway.
