Western Counties North
Avon 45
Cirencester 12

AVON and Cirencester – two relegated sides – contested their final Western Counties North league game with only pride at stake.

And it was the hosts who ran out comprehensive winners, running in a total of six tries.

A disjointed start saw both sides making mistakes. Avon eventually hit their stride, putting together some neat forward interchanges before crashing over for the first try.

This galvanised Cirencester and their response was a well executed line-out move resulting in Darren Stephens getting over the white wash; Adam Barker's conversion made it 7-5 to the visitors.

Avon rallied and their forward runners began punching holes in the Ciren defence, with the young and inexperienced side proving unable to cope.

Avon went on to score a further two tries and two penalties in the first half making the half-time score 21-7.

As the Ciren players started to tire they were unable to withstand the physicality of the Avon forwards who were now in complete control.

In addition, Ciren were being penalised time and again and the yellow cards were not helping the cause.

Avon went on to score three second-half tries to complete a comprehensive victory. Cirencester did have the last word though with a neat kick pass from Oliver Newman, which was collected by Darren Stephens to score his second try of the day.

The result gave the Cirencester management and coaches a lot to ponder moving into the summer break.

On Friday, rugby continues with Cirencester playing Dursley in the S&D Senior Cup final at Stroud and the KO is 7:45pm.
