CIRENCESTER'S Johnny Varey booked his place in the semi-finals of the Cadet and Junior Championships this weekend with an outstanding win in Essex last Sunday.

Boxing in the 46kg category, and with a record of 21 wins in 26 bouts, Varey was up against Levi Bellfield from Hockley ABC.

Varey dictated the pace in all three rounds, producing flurries of combination punches to catch his much taller opponent.

Bellfield had no answer to Varey's work rate or the lightning speed of his onslaught, with the Cirencester lad earning a unanimous points decision.

Cirencester ABC travelled to Barton Hill in Bristol the previous day when 11-year-old 'Super Sammy' Varey was up against Imraan Shirazi from Peterborough Police ABC.

From the first bell Varey dictated the pace, moving well and catching his opponent with clean punches.

This was the pattern throughout all three rounds in what was another excellent schoolboy bout with Varey winning on a unanimous points decision.

ABA coach Simon Knowles said: "Both boys put in an outstanding performance over the weekend. "Sammy beat a very good boy with a record of six wins and two losses.

Johnny's boxing was the best I've seen from him. He's a brilliant little prospect – the Hockley boy had no answer at all.''
