ED GOODWIN pulled back a few points on the leader Giuseppe Licata in the Total Triumph Order of Merit on a breezy day in the Cotswolds.

Cirencester head pro Goodwin finished in a share for fifth with his four-over-par 75 at the latest Gloucestershire and Somerset PGA Medal played at Naunton Downs.

For the second tournament in a row, Goodwin's young assistant Mitch Caunt had a top-10 finish with his five-over-par 76, the same as former Cirencester pro Peter Garrett and Licata.

Licata stills holds a comfortable 34-point lead over Goodwin who in turn is 10 clear of Russ Berry in third.

Clevedon assistant Ashley Mansell was the only player to beat par at a windy Naunton Downs with his one-under-par 70 to record his second win of the campaign.

A stiff breeze blowing down the course made some holes play extremely long and others much shorter but not necessarily always easier. A bit of rain fell towards the end of the round for many as well which made it a tough day to score.

Home pro Nick Ellis enjoyed his home course event producing a very steady 73 as he shared third with Ian Brown (Newent).

Goodwin also features in the G&S team bidding to beat their Devon compatriots in the annual clash for the third year in a row.

The top eight in the current Order of Merit – Giuseppe Licata (capt), Ed Goodwin, Russ Berry, Ashley Mansell, Paul Barrington, Robin Goodey, Andrew March and Daryl Kelley have been joined by two captain's picks Scott Thompson and Nick Ellis (Naunton Downs).

The match takes place at Filton Golf Club on Wednesday, April.
