BOURTON ROVERS climbed to second in the league after just edging a close contest against a young and talented Abingdon United team at Rissington Road.

The game was played on a heavy pitch which didn’t suit either team’s style.

Bourton dominated the early exchanges and after excellent work in midfield, the hosts broke forward and Adam Webley beat his man before squaring a lovely ball into the path of Connor Teague who finished in style.

Bourton continued to work hard for the remainder of the first half and created a number of good chances. However, their 'keeper Kevin Goodwill was required to make an excellent save when he faced an Abingdon striker in a 40th-minute one-on-one.

Bourton went more direct in the second half but Abingdon United weathered the storm and battled hard to work a way back into the game.

But, after an exhausting match for both teams, Bourton emerged as worthy winners.

Bourton Rovers' manager Scott Powles said: "I have to applaud the players for digging out the win and showing real character and togetherness.

"We are now looking forward to getting players back in the squad after injury and embedding recent new signings for the second half of the season.

Bourton have a short break before facing Flackwell Heath Reserves at home in the Chairman’s Cup on Saturday, January 28 (1.30pm kick-off).
