Cirencester League Div Two
Oaksey 4
Sherborne Harriers 1
OAKSEY dominated this Cirencester League encounter from the start and it was only some erratic shooting – including a missed penalty – and strong defending that prevented a bigger win, writes Phil Rice.
Oaksey manager Tom Hainsworth moved Paul Rose to right back which allowed Ady Lane to move further upfield and the switch benefited both players with Lane unlucky not to score on a couple of occasions.
Jamie Jobbins set up the first goal for the excellent Sam Munton, whose shot was eventually deflected for an own goal.
Ten minutes later an assist from Gareth Jones saw Tim Fry run on to the ball and he found the net with a right-footed shot to make it 2-0.
Home 'keeper Harrie Wilson, virtually a spectator for most of the half, was suddenly called upon to make a smothering save on a 50-50 ball just before the interval.
On 50 minutes Oaksey went 3-0 up as Dom Bird’s incisive ball found Jones and he scored after a trademark run through the home defenders.
Seven minutes later the same player made it 4-0.
Sherborne's top scorer Luke Townsend scored direct from a free kick to give them the consolation goal their efforts deserved.
The game was played in the right spirit and Sherborne bring only credit to the league despite their lack of success on the field.
The match also benefited from excellent, good-humoured refereeing from Graham Clifford.
