Ashton Keynes Res 1
Oaksey 0
A 62nd-minute penalty converted by the home side’s Will Smyth gave Ashton Keynes Reserves their first win of the season and inflicted a big blow to Oaksey’s promotion hopes.
The visitors dominated much of the game but were a long way off their best and while home 'keeper Brad James was in fine form it was one of those days when Oaksey could have played until midnight without scoring.
Tim Fry and Ian Carr caught the eye in the first half down the left flank but Oaksey struggled to break through a resolute defence for whom Matt Fletcher and Jordan Read excelled.
As the first half wore on the basement side came into the game and Carr had to chest a ball off the line just before Smyth looked odds on to claim a headed goal.
Oaksey dominated the second half but the nearest they came to scoring was when Sean Miles forced a great save out of James and then some five minutes from the end substitute Chris Brookes fired a piercing cross across the goal but could not find a flailing foot as Ashton claimed all three points.
In what was his final game in charge before moving back to Burnley, Oaksey's manager Dave Littler, gave a a fine display between the sticks as stand-in 'keeper.
He will be much missed and all have cause to be grateful for his efforts following the pain of relegation last season.
