Stroud & District League Div Four
Avonvale United 1
Wickwar Wanderers 1
A FINE display from the Wickwar goalkeeper thwarted Vale who despite dominating the game managed to equalise with only 15 minutes remaining.
Wickwar struggled to get into the game and the Vale midfield three of Conrad Goodenough, Theo Martin and Kieron Witchard pressed so hard that the visitors were forced into long aimless balls out of defence.
But it was Wickwar who opened the scoring after 10 minutes when the Vale defence were caught napping and Jack Thomas brought down the Wickwar number nine in the box, with the penalty being duly dispatched.
Vale reacted well to the goal and continued to dominate but Goodenough, Johnson, Witchard and Toop all had efforts well saved, while Goodenough also hit the post in an entertaining first half.
Vale remained patient and got their breakthrough with 15 minutes to go when some great interplay between Martin and Toop set Witchard through on goal and he finished into the bottom corner.
Vale went in search of the winner but hit far too many hopeful balls in behind that were easily dealt with by Wickwar defence and the score stayed at 1-1.
MoM: Theo Martin.
