Malmesbury Vics 2

Wincanton Town 4

MALMESBURY VICS suffered their second defeat on the trot when four individual errors proved costly against Wincanton Town.

The Vics started well and deservedly took the lead when Andy Baker’s long ball from right back found Shane Bumphrey all alone on the edge of the box and he coolly chipped the keeper.

The home side then needlessly let Wincanton back into the game when a under-hit back pass from Dan Cole left 'keeper Joe Snell having to charge out, but he could only upend the striker and the penalty was duly dispatched.

The Vics could have restored the lead just one minute later when good work down the left from Bumphrey, ended with him crossing for Jamie Packer, whose shot cannoned off the post from a tight angle.

The second half was a strange affair with three further errors gifting Wincanton the points.

Malmesbury fell behind after 55 minutes when the ball wasn’t cleared and Wincanton scored from the edge of the box.

But the Vics were back level with 15 minutes remaining when Andy Baker's superb free kick was met by a powerful header from the unmarked Tim Bond.

Baker turned from hero to villain when misjudging a back header to Snell which presented the Wincanton striker with an easy one on one.

When Bumphrey stamped on a Wincanton player, he got his marching orders with five minutes to go. But in the ensuing fracas the visiting keeper got only a yellow for swinging a punch at Ewan Kenny.

The points were sealed by the visitors in the final minute when, uncharacteristically, George Peare misplaced a pass straight to the Wincanton substitute who raced through on goal and fired into the corner.

Malmesbury Vics: Snell, Baker, Cook, Fortune, Parker, Peare, Packer, Cole, Bumphrey, Bond, Quinnell. subs: Wilkins, Collins, Kenny.
