LOUIS BOSTON shrugged aside the discomfort of a recently dislocated thumb to make a winning start to the Gloucester and Somerset PGA Winter Medal season at Knowle Golf Club in Bristol.

Boston, who is now attached to Stockwood Vale, carded a three-under-par 67 to win by one from Will Hobbs (Mendip Spring).

Temperatures in the mid-20s made it hard to accept this was the start of the winter season and the opening event attracted a full field.

Boston, who is coached by South Cerney Golf Club pro Tom Motley, was an early starter and opened his account with a two-putt birdie at the par five 2nd.

A clumsy bogey came at the 4th but another birdie followed at the par four 5th hole to return him to red figures. He again traded a bogey with a birdie at the 8th and 9th before adding a fourth birdie after turning for home on the 13th.

A wayward tee shot at the 14th into the trees cost him his final bogey of the day before a brace of birdies to finish his round, his three at 17 courtesy of a 40ft putt.
