Malmesbury Vics 2

A SOLID all-round team performance saw Malmesbury Vics come away with a well deserved three points from Backwell as they remain top of the Western League table.

The happy travelling supporters even resorted to calling manager Kev Bridgeman 'the Malmesbury Guardiola' at one point.

The Vics changed their formation for the first time this year and paired Shane Bumphrey and Sam Parker up front together in a 4-4-2.

It took only 15 minutes for the pair to link up for a goal.

Bumphrey broke down the left after Dan Cole had released him with an inch-perfect pass and he squared for Parker to rifle home at the back stick.

The hosts rarely threatened in the first half and the Vics nearly doubled their advantage when Joe Snell’s long goal kick was flicked on and Andy Baker lobbed the 'keeper only to see his effort clip the outside of the post.

The second half was a fairly even affair and Snell was required to make a superb one-handed save.

The Vics killed the game off with five minutes remaining. This time Parker turned provider for Bumphrey, who held off a defender and slotted the ball past the 'keeper.

Snell then made one final great save to ensure that he and the excellent back four kept a well-deserved clean sheet.

Next up it is Tuesday night's visit to near-neighbours Chippenham Park.
