AVEBURY, the only horse to have won Burghley CCI4* three times (2012-2014), has been put down.
Avebury, who provided Wiltshire-based Andrew Nicholson, with some of the finest wins, also won the Barbury Castle CIC3* four times.
Rosemary and Mark Barlow’s 16-year-old, who retired from eventing in April after a brilliant career, was diagnosed with a malignant tumour in his jaw a few weeks ago.
Sadly there was no appropriate treatment for this type of tumour and the difficult decision was made to put him to sleep.
Nicholson, who bred the horse and named him after the local landmark, said: “He has always been a winner, and I have to thank him for some of the greatest days of my career.”
Avebury has been buried in the garden at the Westwood Stud.
